What is all this talk about living in the NOW? I have often pondered its true meaning. As I progress in my spiritual evolution (a work in progress) I have come to appreciate how profound a practice it is to live in the NOW. Eckhart Tolle popularized this idea in his book The Power of Now. But the idea of the power of living in the present moment is not new. And the potential for healing through the acceptance of the present moment should not be underestimated.
As a holistic therapist, one of my hopes is that others learn to live fully in this present, not in the past, and not in the future. It is in this present moment where we can fully meet ourselves, and be fully met. It is trauma and past experiences can be integrated.
By shifting our perspective from the past and the future, we can feel more strength and confidence in the present, and be better prepared for the future.
Working with what is showing up in the present moment we can….
Clear old beliefs that keep us stuck.
Shift habits that no longer serve the person we want to become.
Heal unprocessed grief, and give ourselves the gift of life.
Harmonize stress and feel calmer and more relaxed.
Improve our sense of worthiness and love ourselves and others more.
Forgive, Appreciate, and Trust
Brining ourselves back to the present moment is not always easy. To do lists and distractions are rampant. We often find ourselves dwelling in the past (in regret or self-loathing), or worrying about the future. However, we cannot affect or control the past or the future; we can only influence and control the now (out thoughts, perceptions, beliefs), which heals the past and sets the future on a desired course.
Through moment-to-moment awareness, we begin to sense how present we truly are in any given instant. Presence isn’t something we force; it emerges as we soften our grip on what we cannot control. A quiet surrender to what is, rather than what the mind wants it to be.
The more we practice bringing awareness to our state of being as it is, the easier it becomes to stay present over time. Ensuring that we are breathing and grounded are key ways to return to the present moment.
Be Still, Be Aware! Namaste!
